Rising Moon, Setting Sun is a fruit and vegetable farm located in the Finger Lakes of New York. The farm is managed in cooperation with the fundamentals of Nature and rhythms of the Earth. Over 100 varieties of fruit and vegetables are grown, using organically approved methods of cultivation. Most of the work is done by hand, otherwise, a very efficient compact tractor is used sparingly. A grass and legume based compost is produced on farm and is the primary source of fertility. A broad range of cover crops and green manures are also used extensively within the low/no till permanent raised beds. Organic seeds are used whenever possible. There are 9 fields, each separated by native pasture and wildflowers. The farm is currently running an 8 year crop rotation plan. All products are sold within a 45 mile radius of the farm.

Winter Planning

Well, the bulk of my seed order arrived. Now its all about the plan! This year I will be seeding and planting with the help of my "2010 Stella Natura" calender. This tells me the "best" days to plant various vegetables based on celestial movements. An absolute must in every Bio-Dynamic garden, and from what I have read, it really works! But for now my life seems consumed by notebooks, catalogs, field maps and imagination. Who would have thought planning an 8 year rotation could be so hard!

The 2nd photo shows some of the cover crops I will be using this year. Johnny's is the trusted supplier at this point, until I start to save my own. New Zealand White Clover, Mammoth Red Clover, Sudan Grass, Field Peas and Oats.(all organic) I also have buckwheat, hairy vetch, crimson clover, soybeans and yellow sweet clover, hopefully out of a mouse's reach somewhere in the barn.
